Nursing homes provide comprehensive, long-term medical care to seniors with acute health conditions in a completely staffed and monitored facility.  Nursing homes, also referred to as skilled nursing facilities, are for seniors who do not need to be in a hospital but can’t be cared for at home and require 24-hour monitoring and medical assistance. Nursing home patients generally suffer from critical or debilitating physical or mental illnesses and are unable to care for themselves. Today's nursing homes offer skilled medical care, physical, occupational and speech therapy, resident activities and dining services.  In addition, some nursing homes offer hospice and end of life care services.

Standard services offered at nursing homes include:

• Private and semi-private rooms

• Three cooked meals a day

• Housekeeping and laundry service

• Rehabilitative therapy, pain management and hospice care

• Exercise, social and physical activity programs

• 24-hour medical staff, therapists and an ombudsman

Memory care or dementia care facilities are especially designed to care for people who have been diagnosed with memory loss and need help with activities of daily living (ADLs).  Memory care environments are intended for those that need help with ADLs, such as bathing, feeding, grooming and dressing, but still want a level of independence. They provide a safe and secure living environment with professional staff that is trained to care for those with memory loss.  Memory care units have 24-hour support staff and are usually on a locked and alarmed premise to assure no one wanders off.  Dementia facilities will have common areas for meals, activities and socialization. Daily activities are planned that help residents with their memory.  Often the daily activities are specially developed to allow residents to associate with some of their favorite interests or hobbies.  

In general, basic services provided by all memory care communities will include:

• Private or semi-private rooms in a secured area designed to keep residents safe from wandering
• Daily meal preparation
• Housekeeping and laundry service
• Medication management and assistance with taking medication
• Exercise and physical therapy activities
• Recreational and social activities
• 24-hour staff and personal assistance

Monthly Fees Range From $6,000 to $7,000.
