5 Website Design Tips for your Senior Living Site

The internet seems to be here to stay as we make our way through the second decade of the 21st century. There are over 5 billion searches on Google made each day, and there are over 1 billion established web domains with that number increasing daily. With constant advertisements, articles, blogs, videos, etc. coming from all sorts of sizes of companies and businesses, how is it even possible to reach your target audience?

People still desire human interaction, but with the convenience of doing their own research and finding the answers themselves through search engines. Overall, it is in your best interest to include search engine optimization best practices to your website. Today, let’s focus on what happens when a person who may be interested in your senior living facility clicks on your website. What do you have to offer and how are you going to make them stay?

1. Keep it Simple

While there are a variety of themes, fonts, and colors to choose from, it is a good idea to keep your web page clear and concise. Using a white background with a dark font has proven time and again to be one of the easier ways to read copy (think newspapers, magazines, etc.) A simple design can stand out from all the buzz and noise of today’s internet.

2. Make your Call to Action Stand Out

We tend to read from left to right, top to bottom so consider putting your most important “call to action” information that you want people to know about in the top, left-hand corner of the web page. What does your senior living community have to offer? Use a bold feature of a larger font with an easy to click tab to make these benefits stand out.

3. Aim for Authentic

If you have a thriving senior living facility, with the permission of residents, don’t be afraid to show it! Taking photos of your facilities and your residents involved in activities is something authentic and something that your readers will appreciate it more than just a stock photo. Another idea is to incorporate video testimonials of your residents and their families on your website. Online reviews are an important feature for most online shoppers and using your website to help them access these reviews also is a great way to show authenticity.

4. Easy Navigation

A good way to think about a website that can be easily navigated is taking a moment to think from an outsider’s perspective. Have someone create a list of common questions that potential residents and their families normally ask or may think about when viewing your site and see how easy it is for someone who has never viewed your web page to find the answers to these questions on your website. Here are some sample questions:

  • What is the Senior Living Facility called and where is it located?
  • What is their contact information?
  • Do they have a blog?
  • What amenities does this community offer?
  • Can I access the home page in one click when I am on a different tab?

Your web page should be designed in a way that makes sense to a reader when searching for information, especially your contact information. Try and include a sitemap on the bottom of each page of your website for easy access to your whole website.

5. Mobile Friendly

Having a website that is mobile compliant is an important feature in today’s WIFI and data-driven world. Think about what you look for when you search for information on your phone. Will you stay on a website if it takes more than a few seconds to load? Not likely. There are a few tools you can use to check your web page’s mobile readiness, like the google search console, to see how fast your website loads on a mobile device, how easy it is to navigate, and essentially if it can do what the desktop version of your website can do!
